The head of the Jordan Industry System and a member of the Amman Chamber of
Industry, Dr. Iyad Abu Haltam, said: The electrical and electronic
industries in the Kingdom are an advanced and promising sector, and many of
them have a large production of household electrical appliances.
In an exclusive
statement to Al-Rai, he confirmed that the production capacity of these
industrial companies meets the needs of the local market and covers its
requirements of electrical appliances, and that they also have a share in
exporting their products to neighbouring Arab markets, Gulf countries and North
Africa.
He hinted that we
have a number of leading companies whose exports make millions of dollars, such
as Petra Engineering Industries, which has a remarkable presence in the
American market, in addition to its coverage of the local market.
Dr. Abu Haltam
praised the quality of our electrical industries, noting that they are
manufactured according to Jordanian standard specifications, and that they are
distinguished by their energy savings and their commitment to the required
energy efficiency standards.
He denied rumours
that national industries in this regard are unable to meet the needs of the
local market, denouncing the calls of some to import these products from
abroad, while stressing that Jordan is the nucleus of electrical industries in
the region, and some of our industries compete in global markets.
He pointed out that
the industrial system in Jordan is led by the Amman Chamber of
Industry; It seeks to change the consumer's attitude towards enhancing the
citizen's confidence in the local product that conforms to international
standards, enjoys high quality and meets the consumer's taste.
He noted that the
Standards and Metrology Organization is making great efforts to prevent poor
quality imported products from entering the Jordanian market, but despite all
attempts to prevent their entry, we find these goods in the markets.
Abu Haltam revealed
that the prices of electrical appliances are affected by the production inputs
of global commodities for raw materials, such as copper, iron, aluminium and
plastic granules, which depend on the prices of the international stock
exchange.
He added that
during the year 2020 and 2021 at the time of the pandemic, these commodities
increased significantly and significantly, due to the high prices of raw
materials that enter the electrical industries, and the rise in freight prices
to seven times, especially since raw materials are imported from East Asia,
specifically from China.
Abu Haltam pointed
out that most of the money spent on importing goods at such a high cost is
wasted outside Jordan, compared to the local industry, most of which is spent
at home, and the local added value supports the local economy.
He added that we
must strengthen this promising industry we have, which depends on technology,
skills and added value to develop industrial integrations, which are considered
part of the engineering industries, and the concerned authorities should focus
on it and work to encourage its construction and growth, and increase the number
of national factories in this field.
Dr. Abu Haltam
revealed that, according to last year’s statistics, we have 89 registered
factories in the field of electrical and electronics, with a registered capital
of 63.5 million dinars, and the number of employees in them reached about 2,136
workers, and that their exports amounted to about 49.1 million Jordanian
dinars.
