The Chamber of Industry of Amman stressed the importance of
the visit of Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi to the Republic of Algeria recently,
during which they discussed the development of cooperation between the two
countries in various fields, especially economic and activating joint committee
meetings.
Fathi al-Jaghbir, Chairman of the Amman Chamber of Industry,
called for activating the bilateral free trade agreement between Jordan and
Algeria to activate the trade exchange movement and establish joint projects.
The agreement was signed on May 19, 1997 and entered into force on January 31,
1999, Exemption of products of Jordanian and Algerian origin from customs
duties and other fees and taxes.
The Algerian market is considered one of the most promising
and large markets capable of absorbing many national products. However,
Algeria's imposition of customs duties on a group of goods is an obstacle to
Jordanian products to enter the Algerian market in violation of the Arab
agreement to establish a free trade area.
He pointed out that the volume of imports of Algeria
annually amounts to 60 billion dollars, mostly from Europe and China, while
exports from all Arab countries do not exceed 4% of the total imports, despite
the reduction of the negative list put by the Algerian Republic on Arab goods
From 927 commodities to 536 items in response to the results of the 43rd
meeting of the Committee for the Implementation and Follow-up of the Economic
and Social Council of the League of Arab States held in Cairo in May 2017, promising
to remove this list soon.
Al-Jaghbir expressed his keenness to participate in all the
economic events organized in Algeria, especially the Algiers International
Fair, in addition to organizing a number of economic delegations to discuss
with the officials in Algeria. He expressed his hope that the private sector in
both countries will contribute to strengthening and strengthening economic
relations between the two countries. Through joint investments, pointing to the
presence of Jordanian investments in Algeria concentrated in the pharmaceutical
industry with an investment volume of 67 million dollars.
He stressed the importance of having a Jordanian commercial
office in Algeria to undertake the task of providing the Jordanian private
sector with all the developments related to trade, tenders, contracting, import
and export in Algeria, as well as follow up on resolving issues and problems
that exporters may face in the Algerian market. Algerian patients to be brought
